EARTH DAY 2009

TODAY IS EARTH DAY

MOST OF YOU KNOW THAT I HAVE RECENTLY BECOME A TREE HUGGER.
THIS HAPPENED WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH IRINA AND I WASN'T SURE WHAT TO MAKE OF IT. A FRIEND WITH SIMILAR VIEWS POINTED OUT THAT SOMEWHERE IN MY SUBCONSCIOUS, I WANTED TO MAKE THIS A BETTER PLACE FOR MY BABY. THE MORE I THOUGHT ABOUT IT, THE MORE IT MADE SENSE. I WANT TO DO ALL THAT I CAN TO LEAVE OUR EARTH A LITTLE BIT HEALTHIER FOR HER. IF WE CONTINUE TO WASTE OUR NATURAL RESOURCES NOTHING WILL BE LEFT FOR OUR KIDS EXCEPT MILES OF LAND COVERED IN GARBAGE.
I AM DOING MY PART. ARE YOU?

to pose or not to pose

This evening I went to the gym and decided to try a yoga class. I prefer to take a cardio or step class but none were available and it beats the stationary bike and treadmill. I have taken yoga classes before and they just seem too hippie-ish (even for me). I have my own mat and I set up camp towards the back of the room since I have never sat in with this particular instructor. The lights are dimmed and the room is quiet, as the music plays I can start my cynical side awakening. "Bring awareness to your breath" the lady softly says,..."what the crap does that mean"? I screamed in my head! This class is supposed to help me relax and forget the everyday worries of life, not piss me off further. As we get into "dog", "cat" and "child" pose, I gave my eyes a work out from rolling them everytime she said something like "feel the negative energy exit your finger tips". Some of these poses are nearly impossible to do, a few girls fell over just trying to do an "angry cow"..or something like that. I did enjoy the challenge of holding the difficult poses for several seconds and for a minute the class worked- I escaped the troubles of my day. I was hard at work trying to master the "pidgeon" pose; I saw possibilities for this pose in the bedroom and was determined to hold it for more than 5 seconds. After an hour of animal poses, a CD of "Sounds of Tibet" and countless whispers of what I find to be useless chants, I found myself wiping sweat from my brow. Overall I enjoyed the class and will go again next week.

National Cowgirl Museum

A couple of weeks ago our playgroup gathered at the Cowgirl Museum, I'm just now posting this...I have a daughter full of SO much energy...I can only do so much! Unfortunately I forgot my camera and have no photos of the event. On the plus side, the museum has a "bronc riding exhibit" that captures a short clip of kids pretending to ride a mechanical horse. Irina had fun watching the older kids ride this horse and seemed up for the challenge. She saddled up and did not hate it...here is the super short video clip of her several seconds of fame.

1st Easter Egg Hunt

This first photo is of her buddy James reaching for her basket and Irina pretending to cry! I thought it was so funny!

WHOOP!

This past Wednesday my MOPS group from church organized an Easter egg hunt. This is Irina's second Easter but she was under 2mths old last year so I'm calling this her first. I am a complete hippie about things and I took it upon myself to make Irina a recycled basket for her eggs. I used and old egg carton and painted it the family's favorite color...maroon. I just used half and gave the other half to a Spurs fan with Spurs decor. I put some ribbon over the top for a handle and presto!-an earth friendly Easter egg basket that has 6 little nooks for each egg. Irina loves it and helped me put on the ribbon on the bottom and by "help" I mean eating the fabric glue. Craigs only negative comment was "why are we limiting the number of eggs she can get"? He said he always the enjoyed the competition of getting the most eggs...I quickly reminded him that she is 14mths and would probably eat the grass. She proved me wrong and ate some of the wood chips found near the slide and swings instead. She had a great time!
